Blepharoplasty

Enhance the beauty of your eyes with the innovation and expertise of ABH Medical Group.

About the treatment

Blepharoplasty is an advanced surgical procedure aimed at rejuvenating the area around the eyes, eliminating signs of aging such as bags and sagging eyelid skin. Over time, the eyelids stretch and the muscles that support them weaken, resulting in excess skin and fat accumulating in the upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty, addresses this problem by removing excess skin and fat, restoring the natural appearance of the eyes. The result is a more rested and youthful appearance of the eyes, that enhances the charm of your gaze and positively contributes to improving your image and psychology.

At ABH Medical Group, our specialized team, led by distinguished Plastic Surgeon Dr. Athanasiou, combines advanced medical expertise with the latest technology to achieve excellent results for every patient. OUR DOCTORS ANSWER

Frequently asked questions

During the operation, which takes about 30 minutes to an hour, the plastic surgeon removes excess skin and fatty tissue from the upper and lower part of the eye, if necessary. Local anesthesia is used in both upper and lower eyelid surgery.

On the upper eyelids, the incision is made at the natural crease line, located approximately 8-10 millimeters above the eyelashes in order to remove both excess skin and excess fat.

On the lower eyelids, the technique is done in two ways. If the problem is "bags", without loose skin, the so-called transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty can be performed. During this procedure, which leaves no visible scar, the incision is made inside the eyelid so that the specialized surgeon can remove the excess fat, which is responsible for the "bags". Alternatively, when, in addition to "bags", there is also loose skin, the incision is made just below the eyelashes, so that it is not visible.

At the end of the operation, small stitches are placed, which are removed after a week. Blepharoplasty is not considered a painful operation. The patient may have a feeling of heaviness, which subsides after the first few days.

After eyelid surgery, you may experience a sensation of pressure or mild discomfort, as swelling in the area typically appears right after the procedure. After the operation, your face may be slightly swollen for a week, but the expression will remain the same.

The typical post-surgical appearance involves swelling and bruising around the eyelids, cheekbones, and cheeks. Swelling and bruising are most pronounced during the first 2-3 days, but by the end of the week, the bluish discoloration around the eyes gradually fades, turning to a pale yellow as the microhematomas are absorbed. Occasionally, following surgery, you may experience blurred vision, which can be accompanied by tearing or mild sensitivity to light. These symptoms typically resolve within a few days.

You will notice an improvement right away, but the final results will become apparent after 2-3 weeks, once the swelling has fully subsided.

he incisions are placed within the natural folds of the eyelids, making the scars nearly invisible once fully healed.

After blepharoplasty, swelling typically lasts 5-7 days, though this can vary depending on the technique used and the nature of your work. During this period, it's advisable to wear sunglasses, avoid lifting heavy objects, and refrain from vigorous activities. Most patients resume their daily routines after 7-10 days, but full recovery may take up to 3 weeks.

The results of blepharoplasty are long-lasting, typically lasting 10-12 years, as the removed skin does not regenerate. However, the natural aging process continues. At ABH Medical Group, we offer modern, effective, and safe methods to help you maintain your appearance and slow down the signs of aging.

The pre-operative procedure of eyelid plastic surgery includes the following steps:

  • Photos of the area are taken
  • Twelve (12) hours before the operation, food intake is stopped
  • Six (6) hours before the operation, fluid intake is stopped
  • On the morning of the operation, no medication is taken before the consent of the anesthesiologist
  • Alcohol is stopped one (1) week before surgery
  • In case of sedation or general anesthesia, a meeting with the anesthesiologist is necessary before the operation
  • Do not take aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, or herbal supplements ten (10) days before surgery, as these all increase the chance of bleeding during and after surgery
  • Three (3) days before the operation and for each day the patient washes the face with medicated soap

Yes. Blepharoplasty can be performed alongside other cosmetic procedures, such as a facelift or brow lift, in which case general anesthesia will be required. However, if the procedure is focused solely on the eye area, it can also be done under local anesthesia.
